AIPAC, Please Pack Your Knives and Go

One of my favorite television reality shows is Top Chef.

At the end of the competition each week, Padma Lakshmi turns to one of the hopeful contestants and says, “Please pack your knives and go.”

Definitive, succinct and the culmination of a presence no longer welcome in the kitchen.

Perhaps it is time for the Jewish people who embrace Israel and its survival to say to AIPAC as well, “Please pack your knives and go.”

Time for Change

Human nature is absolutely adverse to change.

For this very reason, the very idea of change meets with resistance and great friction. However, change is inevitable. Such was the Industrial Revolution, resulting in better conditions for the working masses, and so was the Technological Race in which we are now, from the advent of the computer to amazing new communication frontiers.

The Newcomer

A new phenomenon is taking the world by surprise with its intensity, rapid acceptance and success. It is called “J Street.”

Jewish Americans stand up to the traditional Israel Lobby and say: “We are here too. Listen to us, our viewpoint has validity. AIPAC is not the only voice of the Jewish people.” AIPAC, large, strong and very well endowed, stands at ease. First it dismissed J Street altogether, but now it has to start listening and adapt (or fight).

Last week, we heard from Valerie Jarrett, Senior Advisor to the President, and Antony Blinken, National Security Advisor to the Vice President, at the J Street Conference. The Carpenter

“Because you are a holy people to the Lord your God. Lord your God has chosen you to be to him a unique people of all the nations on the face on this earth.” Deuteronomy 7:6

I am invited to dinner with a group of people who care about Israel at a Christian pastor’s home.

The Christians stand with Israel, no questions asked. Not all Christians, of course, but many do. It started with Pope John Paul II whom Israelis will always remember with deep fondness and great appreciation.
