“In the end, you are exactly–what you are.
Put on a wig with a million curls,
put the highest heeled boots on your feet,
yet you remain in the end just what you are….” Mephistopheles in Goethe’s Faust
The Faust legend is a story that continues to reinvent itself in the historical context of the human species.
The latest “deal” between the Palestinian Authority and Hamas is evidence the devil is still successful at recruiting and needs not fear obsolescence.
Upon hearing of this new partnership, many scratched their heads, the devil’s nickname aside, wondering why an organization that applauds itself as “moderate” would sign onto such a blatantly evil group as Hamas. An arm of the evil empire of Iran now so despised and maligned in a chaotic world.
The answer is as simple and old as time, evil still tempts through power and appeals to those whose inherent soul is flawed beyond repair.
It would be foolish to believe that those in the Middle East are not familiar with the Faustian legend, one that has become rooted in popular culture for two hundred years since Goethe penned the first part of his masterpiece in 1808.
Whether reading the original or watching it portrayed in the modern vernacular in books, movies and plays like Damn Yankees, it is as accessible an object lesson as “a penny saved is a penny earned,” perhaps another one most have chosen to forget.
The Palestinian cause has hit a brick wall.
After the vote in the UN, it was evident the Palestinians needed to command more attention, yet they were quickly thrown to the back burner by the pressing issues of world economic collapse, riots over entitlements and wars.
What is a petulant child like the Palestinian Authority to do to control center stage once again?
Sell their soul to the devil, of course.
Not that one would ever assume they possessed a soul in the first place. And this is the irony of their action after all.
Joining with Hamas was nothing if not symbolic.
It announced to the world how desperate and pathetic a leader Abbas was, and still is, and how little he cares for his people.
One might assume he sold his soul to the devil to accomplish good.
This would be the exact opposite result of his folly.
Refusal to acknowledge Israel’s right to exist, continuation of anti-Israel policies, teaching young Palestinian children to hate and destroy Israel from the time they can see and hear and acts of terrorism against Israelis qualify Abbas as nothing more than a desperate terrorist.
His goals were never lofty but laced with the arsenic of hatred that permeates the Middle East.
Attention is the lifeblood to a despot like Abbas, and the fading limelight brought new desperation to his cause.
Although he reveled in the fact the United States government’s support of Israel had weakened and the current administration has consistently berated and maligned the Jewish State, the desired result has not occurred.
This is not because of any great effort on the part of the United States or a world that would gladly help Abbas accomplish his aims.
It is due instead to what is left of the self-determination that created the Jewish State and sustains it to this day.
Problems inside Israel between political rivals and religious factions pale when faced with annihilation.
Even American Jews, although too many are misguided and self hating where Israel is concerned, when faced with another Holocaust, will have to abandon their distaste for Israel and admit it is time to be a Jew once more.
So, what was accomplished by Abbas and Hamas joining forces? Did they achieve the desired end?
Quite the opposite, actually.
Even those in the world who believed Abbas’ lies about wanting peace with Israel and being the victim and pathetic underdog in their so-called struggle, now see the Palestinians for what they are: evil and misguided with a black heart and no soul.
Although most of the world bought into their lies about Israel, those in the know knew better. Palestinian prisoners in Israel have a far better life than Abbas has ever provided or ever would to his people.
Now it is evident where they are coming from and who they truly are.
Iran is vocal and aggressive about its hate for the Jewish people and the Western World. No secrets there. There never are with despots. Evil is not afraid to lay out its game plan in detail, because it is well aware good will never believe or act against it.
Although the world was easily deceived by Hitler, no one ever doubted Mussolini was his ally.
Now no one needs doubt Iran is Abbas’ ally.
They have officially come out of the closet as terrorists and unashamedly joined the ranks of the most evil regime existing today. What’s next, Abbas and North Korea?
As a Jew I am thrilled with this development. Some of us have never been fooled by the rhetoric or pandering and seen clearly through the thin veil of seeking a better life for the Palestinian people.
Now at last the world will obviously see.
If a man is judged by the company he keeps, all is crystal clear in the world of insanity in the Middle East.
A handshake, a joining together of two evils has created not sympathy but disgust for a man who once played the game, badly, but at any rate played successfully to many in the audience.
The final curtain is about to descend on Abbas and the last act will be laced with the flames of the devil collecting his due.
It couldn’t happen to a nicer despot.
Perhaps with his demise a saner head will arise from the ashes to accomplish good for all in the region. Those who seek peace and a good life should be afforded one.
This end will never be accomplished by signing deals with the devil. That still remains the quickest way to get burned.
